Youth Center
The Youth Center became a part of Slater when local civic groups, churches, and the fire department volunteered to help develop and organize a youth center. The main goal for the Youth Center was to provide a safe, alcohol, and tobacco free facility for kids in Junior High and High School. This rule was later adjusted to include fifth graders and above, when they found out that the main users would be children under the age of sixteen. In six months there were sponsors for every month of the year and people were volunteering with donations like their time and money to help guarantee that the center would be successful.
Dances are held on regular basis at the Youth Center. These events reflect
the age group that the dances are being thrown by. Other sponsors have held
a movie night, where they brought in a big screen TV and surround sound
along with free popcorn. A group of moms actually started a Young Children
Program on Saturday mornings for children up to six years old. You can also
rent the center for 25 dollars for two hours. The Slater Chamber of Commerce
uses the Youth Center to expand their membership and attendance to monthly
meetings. The Youth Center has been a big success because of the children
that come to have a good time, the volunteers, and the groups that use the
center.
